Dance drama recreated from China's classic novel staged in NYC

"A Dream of Red Mansions," a dance drama originally created by Jiangsu Centre for the Performing Arts and based on "The Dream of the Red Chamber," one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, recently had its U.S. premiere at Lincoln Center in New York City, captivating more than 1,000 viewers with its blend of traditional Chinese aesthetics and a contemporary interpretation of the classic novel.

The production, which has four performances, offers audiences a new way to experience the renowned work, written in the 18th century.

"While some overseas viewers may not be familiar with 'The Dream of the Red Chamber,' dance itself could help transcend cultural barriers," said Qin Xi, a cast member who plays Wang Xifeng in the dance drama. She expressed hope that the performance would allow Western audiences to experience a contemporary interpretation of the Chinese classic.

Natalia O'Connor, a middle school teacher from New York, said it was her first time watching Chinese classical dance. She said the performers' graceful and moving performances, particularly their use of water sleeves, left a deep impression on her. She added that the set design was imaginative and that the production demonstrated a high level of artistic excellence. "Watching the performance sparked my interest, and I would like to learn more about the Chinese classic novel 'The Dream of the Red Chamber,'" she said.

Ye Biaorong, chairman of Jiangsu Cultural Investment and Management Group, which planned the dance drama, said the production reconstructs the classic from a youthful perspective and with a contemporary aesthetic. The dance drama has been staged more than 480 times in China and overseas and has won audiences' hearts. He said the performance in New York also aimed to allow overseas audiences to experience firsthand the innovative vitality of contemporary Chinese art, promote the international dissemination of cultural products, and bring more outstanding productions overseas in the future.
